What is Foothills Sertoma

Membership in the Foothills SERTOMA chapter of Sertoma International consists of an active mix of business owners, professionals, and community leaders all with the common goals of building fellowship, supporting each other, and raising money for directed giving to children and families in need, while having a great time doing it!

Foothills Sertoma is a newly chartered club of Sertoma International. Three other Sertoma Clubs are active in Tucson, the oldest having been founded in the late 1950's.

The new club meets as a group monthly, with the various committees meeting as needed. The luncheon meeting format is fun and educational, and a great way to get involved in and with the community while networking with other like-minded business and community leaders.

Where and When Do We Meet?

The Foothills Sertoma club meets at 12:30, the second Friday of each month at McMahon's Prime Steak House, 2959 N. Swan (Swan and Ft. Lowell).  The meeting format allows for time to meet and catch up with other members and guests, to conduct the club’s business, and hear from a wide variety of speakers about what is going on in our community

Please join us for great conversation and a chance to meet movers and shakers in Tucson.

June Update From The President

Hello Fellow Sertoman's,   This newsletter is my final during my reign of terror as President. I wanted to "Thank" all of our great members, guests and volunteers for their help this past year.

We faced a difficult economy this past year and managed to grow our membership while successfully raising money for both our operational and sponsorship accounts. Going forward we are well positioned to donate more money to the various charities we will work with in the new year. Given that we are entering our clubs third year this reflects well on all of our efforts.

We introduced the sale of basketball books to raise money for our operational expenses and it was a great success with "Thanks" to Ed Lochhead. Scott Caddow provided us with a wonderful social/ fundraiser cruise that we will continue to offer every year as we always want to have fun while raising money. The May 15th golf fundraiser was a great success despite our economy and is a tribute to the efforts of the Golf Committee, our members and Sandra Swanson's management skills.

Membership continues to grow as Joe Higgins guided us along as he is the thread that ties most of us together through business and friendship. We have been honored to extend our community service mission and partner up with our friends at Davis-Monthan AFB under Colonel Mark "Maha" Haskins command Lt Colonel Marty "Moose" Reynolds and Lt Colonel Chris "Coma" Kirshman and finally Major Gary "Moonshine" Holland in Search & Rescue. We couldn't be happier to work with such a fine group of dedicated men and woman.

Sponsorship guidelines have been crafted by Dani Zaleski and we have spread our donations to many organizations in need here in Tucson. This is our mission as we are a non-profit that raises money for other non-profits. Since this is a volunteer organization we all should feel good about the footprint that the Foothills Sertoma Club will leave supporting "Tucson's Children in Need" in the future.

Ed Lochhead has done a wonderful job quarterbacking all our fundraising efforts this past year. Ed deserves a lot of credit for his selfless work. We are in good hands as Ed will continue in this role into the new year.

Bridget Fitzgerald lined up many fun social events and "Happy Hours" this past year as we all gotten to know one another better. Congrats to Bridget and Ricky for the newest addition to the Foothills Sertoma Club with the recent birth of their son, Rourke.

Our relationship with the Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind (ASDB) flourishes and we have able to strengthen our ties with the visually and hearing impaired children at this fine school. When we created the Foothills Sertoma Club we wanted to work closely with the Deans of the Schools at the ASDB to support the many efforts for these kids to be kids like any other by creating fun events on weekends so they could enjoy themselves. Money we have raised has gone to a tailgate party at the UofA/ ASU football game and a bowling party on Easter weekend at Davis-Monthan AFB along with many other ASDB events. Bob Offret has been very generous with his time working with the ASDB and Davis-Monthan.

We head into the new year in great shape and look to make strides to market our club better in our community. Our new President Chrissy Frey has many ideas to help us with this mission. I'm sure we will be working on the website and to raise our profile in the community as one of the premier service clubs in Tucson.

A special note of "Thanks" to Bob & Jan Offret for their generosity having so many parties in their home and to Todd & Sandra Swanson for the Christmas party. I would be remiss not to mention Dr Jack, Sergio and Mark, Greg Baker, George Couston, Gary Oschmann, Keith Cooper, Ryan Horn, Dirk Nelson, Kathy Faller, Rick Schmigle, Gary Hall, Jen Carroll, Victor "Alex" Cota, Ricky Llamas, Terry von Guilleaume, Doug Hamilton, Larry Bailliere, Marc Bleaman, Ed Alexander, Pat Randles, Dan Manka, Bobbie Horne, Greg Carroll, Rick Kennedy and all the wives and husbands who have allowed their spouses to contribute their time to our efforts this past year. If I have failed to mention anyone I apologize and I owe you a drink and look forward to buying it after this Friday's lunch meeting.

My new role will be as Chairman which requires me to wear a tux, drink martinis and hang out with Frank, Dean & Sammie. This past year has been a blast so let's tee it up for another year of fun.

Burke Carroll
